David Royce Garber, 87, a resident of Harrisonburg, passed away on Wednesday evening, February 15, 2012. He was born in Midway, Ohio on May 29, 1924 and was the son of the late John Soloman and Willie Elizabeth Sponaugle Garber.
Mr.
Garber graduated from Harrisonburg High School and served in the US
Army during WWII. In 1939, he took over management of Red Front
Supermarket, which is still in existence. He was a former member of
Grace Covenant Church where he served as Deacon and was on the Board of
Trustee's; and presently a member of Potter's House Worship Center. He
is also a member of the Gideon's, International Businessmen Fellowship
and the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast Group.
On August 30, 1941 he married Doris Jean Orebaugh Garber, who preceded him in death on October 25, 2007.
He
is survived by two sons, Larry Lee Garber and wife, Jo Ann, and John
William Garber, Sr. and wife, Kaye, all of Dayton; seven grandchildren,
Lagailia Annette Garber of New Albany, IN, David Jonathan Garber of
Houston, TX; Scott Lee Garber of Richmond; Bradley Royce Garber of
Jacksonville, FL; Kimberly Jo Garber and John William Garber, Jr., both
of Dayton, and Christopher Michael Garber of McGaheysville; and fifteen
great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in
death by a son, David Royce Garber, Jr., four sisters, Willie Jean
Coffman, Norma Elizabeth Bailey, Thelma Farney Lorentz, and Ruby Garber
Johnston; and two brothers, Robert Elwood Garber, Sr. and John "Jimmy"
Soloman Garber, Jr.

The family will receive friends 7-9:00 PM, Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. A
funeral service will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday, February 19, at the
Potter's House Worship Center in Harrisonburg, with Pastors Dan and
Renee Garber officiating. Burial will follow in Clover Hill United
Methodist Church Cemetery.
