Celebrating 54 Years!

May is anniversary time at Red Front as we celebrate 54 years of serving the community at our Chicago Ave. location. We're celebrating all month long, with items in each May ad for only 54¢. You can also register in the store for drawings to win a $54 Red Front gift card (there will be 31 winners, one for each day!).

We're also anticipating Memorial Day weekend and the start of summer! The tree has returned to Red Front, watch for a special display at the front of the store soon!

The temperatures may be unseasonal, but there's lots of signs of spring at Red Front. You'll find colorful flowers and ferns in the lobby (look for new display shelving coming soon!) and our annual shipment of mulch and potting soils is scheduled to arrive today! But perhaps the most telling sign of spring is the opening of the West End Cafe for the 2012 season.

The Cafe opened on March 12, and will be open Monday-Saturday through December 15th (weather permitting). Once again, various community groups and organizations will be running the hot dog stand to raise money for their group. You can find the schedule and keep track of money raised on our West End Cafe link. As in previous years, you can purchase a Kunzler hot dog (with your choice of chili, ketchup, mustard, relish and onions) and a drink (choose from a variety of Pepsi products) for only $1.50. And new this year, you can add a single serve bag of Utz potato chips (regular or rippled) to your meal for just 25¢ more!

David Royce Garber

    David Royce Garber, 87, a resident of Harrisonburg, passed away on Wednesday evening, February 15, 2012. He was born in Midway, Ohio on May 29, 1924 and was the son of the late John Soloman and Willie Elizabeth Sponaugle Garber.
     Mr. Garber graduated from Harrisonburg High School and served in the US Army during WWII. In 1939, he took over management of Red Front Supermarket, which is still in existence. He was a former member of Grace Covenant Church where he served as Deacon and was on the Board of Trustee's; and presently a member of Potter's House Worship Center. He is also a member of the Gideon's, International Businessmen Fellowship and the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast Group.
     On August 30, 1941 he married Doris Jean Orebaugh Garber, who preceded him in death on October 25, 2007.
     He is survived by two sons, Larry Lee Garber and wife, Jo Ann, and John William Garber, Sr. and wife, Kaye, all of Dayton; seven grandchildren, Lagailia Annette Garber of New Albany, IN, David Jonathan Garber of Houston, TX; Scott Lee Garber of Richmond; Bradley Royce Garber of Jacksonville, FL; Kimberly Jo Garber and John William Garber, Jr., both of Dayton, and Christopher Michael Garber of McGaheysville; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
     In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, David Royce Garber, Jr., four sisters, Willie Jean Coffman, Norma Elizabeth Bailey, Thelma Farney Lorentz, and Ruby Garber Johnston; and two brothers, Robert Elwood Garber, Sr. and John "Jimmy" Soloman Garber, Jr.
     Memorial contributions may be sent to the Gideon's at Rockingham West Camp, P.O. Box 734, Harrisonburg, VA 22803 or visiting their website www.gideons.org.
     The family will receive friends 7-9:00 PM, Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.  A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday, February 19, at the Potter's House Worship Center in Harrisonburg, with Pastors Dan and Renee Garber officiating. Burial will follow in Clover Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Tim and Phyllis Armentrout and their family in the death of their son John this week. John was 20 years old and died as a result of injuries from a car accident. Tim and Phyllis and their crew have kept the floors clean and shiny at Red Front for many years. John helped them on occasion and also worked briefly at Red Front.

Many of you are probably busy getting together everything you'll need for those special meals and events. As we work to keep our shelves stocked with all those items you're looking for, we want to take time to say THANK YOU for your business. We know that without customers coming through the doors, we would need to close the doors. We also know that you have many other choices in the area, so it is with grateful spirit that we thank you for choosing us, and we look forward to continuing to serve you for years to come.

Matt and Fred made a different sort of delivery today. In honor of the 75th birthday of Eggo Waffles, Red Front teamed up with Kellogg's to give away a chest freezer full of waffles. Phyllis Mosher of Harrisonburg was our lucky winner. We will also be donating 76 boxes of waffles to the Harrisonburg Salvation Army in Phyllis' name. Congratulations!

Blast off to a Happy New School Year!

It's that time of year again when we build a fun back to school display partnering with Kellogg's. This year Fred wanted to have a rocket display, so we're blasting off with Tony and his friends for a happy new school year. Stop by and see our rocket and our school bus loaded with great snacks and treats. Kellogg's and Keebler can help the kids start out the day with a healthy breakfast and be a great addition to lunchtime as well.

We're also celebrating the 75th birthday of Eggo waffles by giving away a chest freezer full of Eggo Waffles. 75 boxes of waffles will also be given to the Harrisonburg Salvation Army in the winner's name. Find an entry form in our weekly ad or print on here. Place the form in the box by the freezer. The drawing will be help August 17.

We've started picking tomatoes and cucumbers from our garden, so that means it's time to think about canning. Red Front has canning supplies all year long (find them in aisle 9), but right now we also have some special displays with jars, lids, seasoning mixes and spices. If you're making salsa or pickles, you'll find Mrs. Wage's and Ball tomato and cucumber mixes. We also have variety of fruit pectins to help with your jams and jellies. Our jars range from 4oz jelly jars to 1/2 gallon wide mouth jars, with 1/2 pints, pints, and quarts in the middle. We have both Kerr and Ball lids and also lids with rings. If you are new to canning, you might consider the Ball Discovery Kit to help you get started.

Christmas in July

Recenty a customer noted that Christmas was only 6 months away. It was a thought I could have done without. While I wouldn't mind slightly cooler weather, I'm not ready for the hustle and bustle of the Christmas holiday and all that goes with it. However, when you come into Red Front during the week of July 11-16, it might seem just a little like Christmas. Volunteers from the Harrisonburg Salvation Army will be here ringing the bell, giving you an oppurtunity to donate financially to them. All month long you'll find a barrel at the front of the store for donations of non-perishable items. We hope you'll help us fill the barrel several times during the month. While the sound of the bell might seem obnoxious or annoying, we hope you'll hear it as sound pointing both to a need and an opportunity that is present all year round in our community. Thanks for your support!

Graduation Time!

Four of our employees are graduating from high school this year--Matt S, David W, Justin J (Broadway) and Jemma M (Harrisonburg). David S graduated from MTC. Several of them will continue to work here, a couple of them are moving on. We congratulate them for their achievements and wish them the best in their future planes.

We are also happy to announce Red Front's winner of the Great Scholarships for Great Students program. Christina Teter from Broadway High School won this year's $1,000 scholarship. Congratulations Christina!

Anniversary Celebration Continues!

We hope you've been enjoying our weekly 53¢ deals as we celebrate our 53rd anniversary during the month of May. Be sure to check our ads to see what our specials are each week, including our Super Anniversary Saturday Buy One, Get One offers in our deli.

Last week several employees attended a food show hosted by one of our suppliers. We were able to order lots of fun items, including many new things, that will be arriving to our store in June. With new items becoming available every day, some times it is hard to know how to order. Limited space keeps us from ordering one of each (although our manager comes close to that some times!), but if there are items you'd like to see us sell, please let us know. You can contact us through the website or stop by customer service. If you've purchased the item somewhere else and have an empty package you can bring to show us, that is very helpful for us in finding out if its something we can order. If you don't have the package, the UPC number can also be a big help to us. Recently a customer inquired about Annie's Homegrown items, you can now find Annie's Homegrown cereals, mac & cheeses, crackers and grahams on our shelves.

During the month of May, Red Front celebrates the anniversary of our Chicago Avenue location, where we've now been serving the community for 53 years! During this month we especially want to say "thank you" to our customers--you're the reason our doors stay open!

We celebrating in a variety of ways! You'll find 53¢ items in our ad each week beginning April 27. Also, during the month of May our deli is having some super Saturday savings with buy one get one free items each Saturday. You won't want to miss the special one day Friday the 13th sale on May 13! There will be some food demos and other fun things happening throughout the month as well. Easter Reminders

As you prepare for your Easter celebrations, we'd like to remind you of a few things.

First, you can continue to collect Bunny Bucks until April 23. Bunny Bucks must be redeemed by April 26.

Also, you want to be sure to register to win a 10lb coconut cream Easter egg! You'll see it on display with an entry box as you enter the store. The drawing will take place sometime after noon on Friday, April 22.

You'll still find lots of Easter candy and treats in the store. We have egg dying kits, or if you're running out of time, this week our deli department has colored hard-boiled eggs just ready for you to pick up. From hams, coconut cakes, and beets, you can find your Easter favorites here.

Finally, we hope you'll remember the reason for this holiday. The Easter story is almost too remarkable . . . almost too unbelievable to be true. How could the Resurrection have taken place? Why would God love us that much? But He did . . . and because it is true, we have assurance of His love for us today and hope for tomorrow.

Tony the Tiger comes to golf at Red Front!

We just built another fun Kellogg's display and we hope you'll come by to see it during the next two weeks. Thanks to John Sr. and Perry, we have a golf putting green in the store, complete with sandtraps! Valley View Golf Carts provided Tony with a golf cart to view the action (Dig'Em and Toucan Sam caught a ride on the back seat. This fun display aims to celebrate Earth Day by going to the golf greens and for an additional bonus we've connected with Heritage Oaks and First Tee of Harrisonburg. See the Tee Time schedule below and stop by during those times to learn more about The First Tee program. Kids ages 2-18 will be able to putt for prize (will anybody get a hole in one?). If you'd like to "go green" another way, you can drop off used but usable golf clubs at the store that will help benefit First Tee.
We'll be posting some pictures on our website soon (you can also check them out on our Facebook page now).
Of course, it wouldn't be a Kellogg's display without some great cereal deals, plus you can get a free reusable tote with a qualifying purchase. Come check it out!

Spring Cleaning

    We've spent some time this week doing some spring cleaning, mostly in the back room where its easy to let things accumulate and we're never quite sure where all the dust comes from! If you've been in the store, you've probably noticed that our interior updates are still happening. While most of the painting is now complete, the current phase of the project is replacing floor tiles.
    While spring cleaning is a chore, there's all kinds of other fun signs of spring we're excited about. Mulch and onion sets are here, it won't be long until the plants arrive. Easter is several weeks away, there's still time to collect 6 Bunny Bucks to redeem for a free Smithfield Spiral Sliced Half Ham or $10 off your order. And be on the lookout in our upcoming ads for you how can enter to win a 10lb Coconut Easter Egg.
    We're also excited about a fun display we'll be building next week. We're partnering with Kellogg's and First Tee for a golf display. Watch for details about when kids can come and try to get a hole in one and how you can donate your used golf clubs.

Signs of Spring at Red Front

Some of my daffodils are blooming, but yesterday morning they were covered with a dusting of snow! We've had some warm days, but then the cold weather has come back, so I am glad to see signs of spring around at Red Front.

. . . A truck load of mulch and potting soil arrived last week. So if you're ready to get out in the flower beds, we've got several varieties of mulch (including colored), top soil, potting soil, and manure available. Pay inside at the registers and one of employees will be happy to help load the bags into your vehicle. Flower and vegetable seed packets are also available in our produce department.

. . . The West End Cafe opened for the season Monday (March 7, our earliest start ever), run this week by the folks from the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary. From now through early December (weather permitting) the stand will be open Monday-Saturday from 10am-6pm. Purchase a hot dog (with or without chili) and a drink for $1.50, and all proceeds benefit the group running the stand each week. Don't forget about our Tuesday special, when the price is just $1.00. We're still finalizing the schedule for 2011, but the schedule and a thermometer tracking the money raised can be viewed at http://redfront.com/west_end_cafe.html.

3) Bunny Bucks and Jelly Beans! There's something special when the Easter candy arrives--eggs, bunnies and jelly beans. And while your purchasing these items you can start collecting Bunny Bucks. For every $50 spent in a single transaction (excluding gift cards and delivery fees) you'll receive one Bunny Buck (maximum of 6 per order). Collect and redeem 6 Bunny Bucks for a FREE Smithfield Spiral Bone-in Half Ham or $10 off any other ham or store purchase. The last day to collect Bunny Bucks is April 23 and they must be redeemed by April 26.

Organic Produce

This week the guys in our produce department decided to switch things around a little bit in order to expand area for organic produce. A larger space allows them to order a wider variety of items. So check out the organic produce section (including organic dressings and dips) the next time you're in the store. If there's a specific item you'd like to see us have, please let us know, the produce manager will be happy to see if he can order it.

Valentines and the return of the West End Cafe . . .

Valentine's Day is only a few days away, and that means several things here a Red Front. First you'll find lots of special candy treats in the candy corner and bulk food sections, a good selection of Hallmark cards, and some neat silk floral arrangements made locally can be found in the lobby. Valentine's Day is also when many people will be getting up early to stand in line in the cold (most likely, although a warm morning would be nice) to get an application for a spot in the 2011 West End Cafe schedule. Applications for non-profit groups to run the hot dog stand for a week will be available at 7:00am on February 14th. There's a limited number of applications available, and they go quickly, so if your group would like to apply you'll want to have someone from your group here early Monday morning.

Trying to stay warm . . .

I know that there are a few people around who like cold weather, but most of us at Red Front do not fit into that category. On these cold days, we want to make sure you know about our new coffee and doughnut combo. From 7am-2pm Monday-Saturday you can get a 12oz to go cup of hot coffee from our deli and a doughnut from our bakery for only 89¢ plus tax. Or you can skip the doughnut and get the coffee only for just 49¢ plus tax.

Online Shopping Site Update

The online shopping site is back online again, so please feel free to log in and browse or shop the site. We're planning on adding hundreds of bulk items to the site this week!

. . . A special "Special K" display asking "What will you gain if you lose?" Not quite sure what the display will end up looking like, but I think some "snow" may be involved.
. . . We'll be lowering the prices on over 1,000 items in the store with our "great buy" specials. Look for the new design blue tags in every aisle.
. . . Valentine candy favorites should be on the shelf by the end of the week (you'll find some in the bulk food department already)!

Home Delivery Update

The first several weeks of our online shopping site and home delivery has gone very well. We've had numerous delivery orders (some customers have already used the service more than once) and a couple of orders that customers chose to pick up at the store. We're still tweaking the site, and hope to be adding Richfood and bulk food items in the next couple of weeks. If you haven't checked out the site yet, please do. We've just added a demo video on the home delivery page to give you an overview of the site, but it's easy to sign up for an account and look around for yourself. Remember you can place orders up to 7 days ahead of time and you can make changes to your order up until 3 hours prior to your selected delivery or pick-up time period.

Turkey Feathers!

It's time to start collecting Turkey Feathers. Beginning Oct 13 you'll receive a turkey feather for every $50 spent in a single transaction (maximum of 5 per order). Collect five turkey feathers and redeem them from Oct. 17-Nov. 30 for a free Farm Fresh frozen turkey (10-14lb avg.) or $10 off your next grocery purchase. Qualifying online orders will also receive turkey feathers, but they can only be redeemed in store at this time.

After months of discussions and weeks of fine tuning details, we are happy to announce that Red Front Online Shopping is NOW OPEN! We know there are still bugs to work out, items to add (and some to delete), but it feels good to say we're ready for business. Click on the home delivery link, read our guidelines and sign up for an account today. We'll be posting a demo video on how to navigate the site in a couple of days, but it's pretty easy to use. If you live outside our map area, you can register based on a workplace delivery address, or check back in a few days for an option to register for in store pick-up orders only. We've gotten good feedback about our new site, and several of you contacted us about the lack of the store hours on the site. Oops! We'll get them on the site soon, but we are open Monday-Saturday 7am-9pm and Sundays from 12noon-6pm. And in just a few hours (fingers crossed), you'll be able to order groceries online from our website 24 hours a day, seven days a week!
